Wally Simms 9/3/2010
|
| The 2010 season will not be the same as our loyal supporter, Vice President and one of the oldest members of the Club Wally Sims died on the 9th March 2010. Wally was the eldest of three brothers and left school in 1939. Always a keen sportsman, he played some of his first cricket for Surrey Boys before joining a local firm of accountants and then serving in the Fleet Air Arm during the Second World War. After the war he resumed his cricket with the Club and returned to the accountants where he remained until he retired. He was one of a trio of batsmen, Sims, Rattenbury and Davis, that were the backbone of the Club in the 50s and 60s, not only on the field but also as Committee members. Wally took up golf towards the latter part of his cricketing days but continued to watch the game he loved, often traveling to watch Sussex, as it was easier to get to than the Oval. Rarely did he miss any of the Club’s home matches at Pixham and always joined the teams and supporters in the bar after the game to review day’s play. His funeral at Randalls Park Crematorium on Tuesday 30th March was attended by his family, neighbours from North Holmwood and over 20 Club members, including many that had played with Wally. |
