Erasmus and Ward see Dorking Home!

By Toby Blood

2 wins on the spin!

Following an opening day victory to Farnham, Dorking travelled to Oxted for a limited overs clash at Master Park. Oxted won the toss and elected to bat on a flat looking wicket. Corbett and Ward opened the bowling and caused the opening batsman Murtagh and Jackson problems. Once the shine had gone from the new ball, Oxted scored much more freely and Jackson reached a well made 50 from 60 balls. It was 110-0 at drinks, with Edwards and Kelsey ensuring Oxted could not get away from the visitors. The breakthrough came following drinks with Murtagh falling for a well made 38, Erasmus the man claiming the wicket. Further inroads came for Dorking as the impressive Corbett claimed the wickets of the dangerous Lloyd and Fletcher. Jackson was still going strong at the other end and reached a stylish century in the 40th over. The game was evenly poised at this point and Dorking knew restricting the home side could be crucial later on in the game. Mott (25) played nicely before Corbett had him caught at deep square leg by Rogers and with 4 overs left Oxted had 240 on the board. Jackson finished strongly for the hosts as Oxted finished on 271-4 from their 50 overs. Jackson with a quite superb 174 not out. Corbett was the pick of the Dorking bowlers claiming 3 wickets from his allocated 10 overs.

In response, Dorking started off brightly with Kelsey (30) in particular punishing anything off line. It was great to see the former skipper back in the runs, following his season away from the club. Erasmus and Kelsey took the score to 70 when Kelsey was bowled by Murtagh. 70-1 soon become 83-3 as Murtagh picked up the wickets of Pitt and Rogers. A mini recovery was staged by captain Blood and Erasmus but when Blood fell for 19, the game was in the balance. Wickets of Kenway and Farr left Dorking 150-6 and in need of something special. Erasmus reached a very composed 50 and knew if he could bat the duration of the innings the result could be in the away sides favour. He was joined by Ward who batted quite brilliantly, knocking singles confidently and striking boundaries at crucial times in the chase. Dorking had wrestled back the initiative and needed 56 from the last ten overs. Erasmus reached another superb century for Dorking and alongside Ward who struck a quick fire 50, the result was in the bag at Dorking won by 4 wickets.

A fantastic run chase and 2 wins on the bounce.
