After an opening victory in the first fixture of the season, this week saw the Surrey Trust development eleven welcome Ashford. The boys were excited about the opportunity to don their excellent new kit.
Unfortunately, captain Blood lost another toss and we were asked to field. Following this we took to the field. Travis (2-18) and Fredwards (1-24) took the new ball, keeping things tight before picking up a wicket each to remove the openers. Rogers (2-17) and Shrives (0-32) and continued to turn the screw bringing Ashford to 45-5 when rain forced a short interval. The bowlers were aided by an important direct hit run out from Ridler. Howlett (0-18) and Ridler (2-18) then took over the bowling and kept things tight despite a slow (boring) Ashford fightback.
Unfortunately Dorking were not up to their usual high standards in the field with several simple chances going down. One unnamed team member did partly redeem this by taking a one handed snaffle with a leap CR7 would have been proud of. Ashford finished on 129-8 off their 37 overs (rain reduced). All in all, a solid effort from the young Dorking outfit.
The run chase was started by Tom Graham (9) and Barney Davies (11). Both made starts before being dismissed by the Ashford Opening bowler. The former being unlucky as a large inside edge was missed in his LBW decision. Some excellent stroke from Charlie Kenway (58*) play kept the score ticking over; however, Howlett (6) Will E (5) and Ridler (3) all followed the openers back to the pavilion. Ben Rogers (24*) then came to the crease to see the win home with Charlie Kenway. The notable incident of this partnership (Ignoring the exhibition of cover drives) occurred with Ben Rogers on strike. He was forwarded to play the ball, middle his forward D, before proceeding to grab the ball to give back to the keeper (sportsman like). A big ooooooo met this motion and forced him to withdraw his hand having flicked the ball. An appeal followed and the umpire gave it out. After much debate Ashford withdraw the appeal and Rogers continued to bat to see DCC home
Overall, another good win in an outstanding new kit.
