Match Report: Dorking CC 1st XI vs Chertsey CC 1st XI
Surrey Championship Division 3 West – 17 May 2025
Venue: Pixham Lane
Dorking CC made it two wins from two with a gritty 31-run victory over a competitive Chertsey CC side in front of a lively crowd at Pixham Lane.
After being put into bat, Dorking’s innings was a story of resilience and momentum shifts. Opener Chris Thurgood anchored the top order with a composed 65 from 78 balls, stabilising early jitters after the loss of both Barney Davies and Charlie Kenway for single digits. Maduranga Zoysa followed with a fluent 55 off 60 balls, piercing the field with five crisp boundaries as Dorking looked to accelerate.
However, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, and at 170 for 8, the innings looked to be faltering. That’s when Chris Ward and George Edwards stepped up with a vital unbroken 68-run partnership for the ninth wicket. Ward struck a sharp 44* from 34 balls, including a six, while Edwards provided a calm, composed 22* off 38 deliveries. Their efforts lifted Dorking to a competitive 238/8 from their full 50 overs, giving the hosts momentum heading into the break.
In response, Chertsey’s top order found the going tough early on. A brilliant spell from Charlie Kenway (3-45 off 9) helped put the brakes on the visitors, removing key batters at crucial junctures. George Edwards continued his impressive all-round performance with a miserly spell (2-26 off 10), bowling with tight lines and smart variations. There were also sharp pieces of fielding, with three run-outs (including an alert Chris Weill with a fine runout) that pegged Chertsey back just as partnerships began to form.
Despite a fighting 44* from Eric Osner and a solid 42 from Raunak Patil, Chertsey never quite caught up with the rate, finishing on 207/7 after 50 overs.
It was a well-rounded team effort from Dorking, marked by resilience with the bat and discipline in the field. Special mention goes to the game-saving partnership between Chris Ward and George Edwards, which proved the turning point in what was a tightly contested encounter.
