A sun-soaked afternoon at Pixham Lane provided the perfect backdrop for the opening Surrey Championship Division 3 West fixture, and Dorking CC 1st XI delivered a statement of intent with a hard-fought 12-run victory over Ashtead CC 2nd XI.
In a contest that ebbed and flowed throughout, Dorking showed composure under pressure, depth with both bat and ball, and the kind of resilience that wins league cricket.
After being asked to bat first, Dorking posted 245 all out from 47.2 overs — a total built around a superb innings of 83 from Maduranga Zoysa, whose blend of control and aggression anchored the innings when wickets fell around him.
The innings started cautiously, with Ashtead’s bowlers finding early rhythm. Charlie Kenway looked fluent for his 23, while Ben Rogers contributed a valuable 35 in a stabilising partnership with Zoysa after Dorking slipped to 54-3.
Zoysa then took control of the game.
His 83 from 91 balls included 11 fours and a six, expertly balancing accumulation with calculated attacking shots. Charlie Edwards added a brisk 30, helping push the scoring rate through the middle overs, while late contributions from Toby Blood and the lower order nudged Dorking towards what looked a competitive total.
Dorking were aided by 37 extras — something Ashtead will know needs tightening moving forward.
In reply, Ashtead’s chase never fully settled despite several threatening partnerships.
Both T Penycate and C Edwards took vital wickets in the opening spell. Pranav Khera attempted to rebuild and was looking dangerous until G Edwards outsmarted Khera, taking a brilliant caught and bowled. Theo Johnson-Murrell produced the visitors’ standout innings with a well-compiled 59. At 169-7 and later 202-9, the game still hung in the balance as Ashtead refused to fold.
But Dorking’s bowlers repeatedly found answers when it mattered most.
Charlie Edwards was outstanding with the ball, returning figures of 2-31 from his 10 overs and applying relentless pressure through the middle stages. Chris Ward led from the front with a crucial spell of 3-28 from six overs, breaking partnerships and shifting momentum back towards the hosts whenever Ashtead threatened to close the gap.
Charlie Kenway also struck twice, while disciplined contributions from Tom Penycate, George Edwards and Ben Rogers ensured Dorking maintained scoreboard pressure throughout the innings.
With Ashtead eventually bowled out for 233 in the 49th over, Dorking sealed a deserved opening-day victory — one built not on perfection, but on character, composure and key moments seized under pressure.
For a side beginning a new campaign under fresh leadership, there was plenty to like:
Zoysa’s match-defining innings
A bowling unit sharing responsibility
Calmness in pressure moments
And the ability to close out a tight game when momentum threatened to swing
Most importantly, it is two valuable early-season points and a reminder that league cricket is often decided not by dominance, but by which side handles the key moments better.
Dorking CC 1st XI begin their Surrey Championship season with belief, momentum and a winning start at Pixham Lane.
