Dorking CC 1st XI returned to winning ways with a hard-earned five-wicket victory over Farnham CC at Pixham Lane, producing a disciplined all-round performance that showcased resilience, patience and control.
With both sides looking to build momentum in a tightly contested Division 3 West campaign, Dorking's bowlers laid the foundations before the batters calmly guided the hosts home.
Having won the toss, Dorking elected to field first and immediately justified the decision.
Tom Penycate struck in the opening exchanges before Charlie Kenway and George Edwards combined to put Farnham under pressure. At 15-2, Dorking had seized the initiative and never truly allowed the visitors to settle.
While Tom Flack battled admirably for his 42 from 97 deliveries and skipper James Berry contributed 26, Farnham found scoring difficult against a relentless Dorking attack.
George Edwards was the standout performer, producing an outstanding spell of 3-20 from his 10 overs, repeatedly breaking partnerships and maintaining pressure through the middle overs. Toby Blood provided excellent support with 2-24 from eight overs, while Charlie Edwards claimed 1-16 from six highly economical overs.
Across the innings, Dorking's bowlers operated with discipline and control, conceding just 145 runs from Farnham's 50 overs and restricting the visitors to 145-8.
The chase began positively.
Chris Thurgood and Charlie Kenway put on 67 for the opening wicket, setting the tone for what appeared to be a straightforward pursuit. Kenway was particularly aggressive, striking seven boundaries in a fluent 40 from 33 balls.
However, Farnham refused to go quietly.
A cluster of wickets saw Dorking slip from 67-1 to 121-4, briefly giving the visitors hope as the pressure increased. Dom Venn contributed a valuable 28, while the Farnham bowlers continued to fight despite having a modest total to defend.
With the game still requiring composure, Maduranga Zoysa once again demonstrated his value to the side. His unbeaten 15 anchored the closing stages alongside Charlie Edwards as Dorking calmly completed the chase in the 38th over.
While the match will not live long in the memory as a batting spectacle, it was exactly the type of professional performance required in a competitive league season.
Dorking's bowlers dictated the contest, their fielding remained sharp throughout, and when challenged during the chase, the batting unit showed the patience required to get the job done.
The victory moves Dorking onto 59 points after six matches and provides an important platform as the side looks to climb the Division 3 West table during the second half of the season.
