Dorking CC’s Second XI produced an accomplished all-round display to defeat Wandgas First XI by seven wickets in the Surrey Cricket Championship Division Six East.

After restricting their hosts to 189 for nine from 45 overs, Dorking recovered from a mid-innings wobble to reach 190 for three with eight balls to spare. Andrew Homewood struck an unbeaten 59 and captain Andrew Halliday finished 51 not out, the pair sharing an unbroken 107-run partnership to guide their side home in commanding fashion.

Having won the toss and elected to field, Dorking’s bowlers maintained control throughout the Wandgas innings.

Dinil Kodituwakku anchored the hosts’ effort with a patient 49 from 72 balls, while Ishaan Shetty added 26 during an opening stand of 46. Max Ridler made the initial breakthrough by removing Shetty before adding two further wickets to finish with three for 51.

Kodituwakku continued to hold the innings together, but wickets began to fall regularly around him. Freddie Baker was the pick of the Dorking attack, returning an excellent three for 22 from his nine overs, while Halliday claimed two for 23 and Jack Homewood conceded just 26 runs from nine overs while taking one wicket.

Wandgas slipped from 103 for three to 135 for seven as Dorking tightened their grip. Anirudh Ramadurai’s unbeaten 30 and Thinesh Thiyagaraja’s late 21 helped the hosts reach 189 for nine, but Dorking had kept the target firmly within reach.

Barney Davies gave the chase early momentum, striking five fours and a six in an enterprising 38 from 37 deliveries. His dismissal brought Freddie Baker to the crease, and the all-rounder contributed a patient 28 as Dorking progressed to 83.

However, three wickets in relatively quick succession gave Wandgas renewed hope and left the visitors with work still to do.

Homewood and Halliday ensured there would be no further drama.

Homewood showed tremendous concentration throughout his unbeaten 104-ball innings, striking six boundaries and holding the chase together. Halliday provided the acceleration at the other end, reaching his half-century from 71 deliveries with four fours.

Their contrasting styles complemented each other perfectly. Homewood supplied the calm, Halliday kept the scoreboard moving, and the pair gradually drained any remaining belief from the Wandgas attack.

Together they carried Dorking from 83 for three to victory without offering the hosts another opening. The winning runs arrived in the 44th over, completing a thoroughly deserved seven-wicket success and an impressive display of controlled cricket from start to finish.
