Dorking CC 1st XI produced one of the most memorable wins in recent club history, defeating league leaders Esher CC 2nd XI by the narrowest of margins in a thrilling Surrey Championship Division 3 West encounter.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Dorking recovered superbly from a nightmare start to post a competitive 222 all out.

The innings could hardly have begun worse, with Maduranga Zoysa and Barney Davies both dismissed with just four runs on the board. Tom Winetroube steadied the ship before Charlie Kenway counter-attacked brilliantly, smashing 44 from just 29 balls, including nine boundaries, to wrestle back the momentum.

The backbone of the innings came from Taha Suleman, whose patient unbeaten 60 anchored the middle order, while George Edwards played one of his finest knocks for the club, striking an excellent 48 from 48 deliveries with seven fours and a six. Their partnership transformed the innings and gave Dorking a total to defend.

Esher's chase got off to the worst possible start when Charlie Winder was bowled by Tom Penycate with the very first ball of the innings.

Despite early wickets from Chris Weill, who produced another outstanding spell of 2-21 from his ten overs, and Toby Blood, who removed the dangerous Orson Jones for a superb 89 just as the game appeared to be slipping away, Esher edged ever closer to victory.

With five runs required from the final over and two wickets remaining, skipper Toby Blood handed the ball to Tom Penycate.

What followed was cricket at its dramatic best.

Penycate dismissed Max Chambers with the second ball of the over before keeping his composure under immense pressure. Esher managed only singles and twos before Kei Lalor was caught by Penycate off the final delivery, sealing an extraordinary one-run victory and sparking jubilant celebrations among the Dorking players and supporters.

Penycate finished with outstanding figures of 3-46, while Chris Weill (2-21) and Toby Blood (2-35) were outstanding throughout, with Taha Suleman also chipping in with an important wicket.

The victory not only completed a remarkable team performance but also handed league leaders Esher just their third defeat of the season, proving Dorking's ability to compete with the division's very best.
